The Role of Volunteers in Hospice Care
A service that our hospice patients and their families find invaluable is our
volunteer program. HospiceCare volunteers are thoroughly trained and are
committed to providing patients and families with support and companionship.
Every HospiceCare volunteer is interviewed and must pass several detailed
background checks before they are accepted into the program.
Our volunteers are caring, committed people who want to make a difference
in people's lives. They are dependable and trustworthy and are sensitive to
the family's needs, as many of our volunteers have themselves experienced
hospice and know what a blessing that kind of support can be.
Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all
share the common desire to do what they can to help lessen the burden of
families touched by terminal illness.
Although duties vary from patient to patient, hospice volunteers are usually
counted on to:
Provide companionship to the patient
Be a support person to both patient/family
Listen to concerns
Stay with patient while family member runs errands
For volunteers who would rather not visit with patients but still want to help
out the organization, there are opportunities to be of assistance in the office.
Preparing quarterly newsletters, nursing packets and filing are just some ways.
Schedules are very flexible; we simply ask that you see your patient(s) once
every two weeks. Of course, you may visit more often if your schedule permits
and the patient/family is agreeable.
