Prayers and Action

The primary mission of HospiceCare, Inc. is to provide excellent end-of-life
hospice services to all eligible people who seek or are referred to us for care.
A few years ago, the management of HospiceCare, Inc. began to realize that
there are a large number of people, mostly elderly with chronic illness, who
live independently, but struggle every day to remain in that setting.  They were
not eligible for hospice services or any other holistic program designed to give
them the supports they needed to remain living independently.  As a result of
what we were seeing, we decided to start a Community Outreach Program to
try and fill some of those voids and therefore help people have a better quality,
and perhaps quantity of life.

Similar to our Community Outreach Program, many churches already have
programs in place to help the elderly, sick and disabled members of their
congregations.  Most, if not all churches maintain a prayer list and many also
designate members of the congregation to visit those who are home-bound,
hospitalized or in nursing facilities.
We see a natural link between churches
and the Community Outreach Program.

The principles of the program can easily be blended with whatever efforts or
programs churches currently have in place and it will add the medical linkage
HospiceCare, Inc. has established since 1989 with area physicians.  The idea
being to combine the principles of the Outreach Program with the current efforts
of the church in order to surround each person with the support they need, and
to help them obtain more optimal medical care so that they can remain in their
own home and as independent as possible.

"Prayers and Action" is a no-cost program to help our local congregations assist
our most needy and sometimes forgotten members of our communities.  We are
not taking the place of your own outreach programs, just offering a structured
program that may enhance what you are already doing.  This is offered through
your church’s own volunteers and is a wonderful opportunity for anyone desiring
to get involved in a people helping ministry.

If this is something your church would be interested being involved with, please
call Irene Whitener, R.N. at 573/431-0162 or 800/876-0162.
