The Myths of Hospice
Sadly, the misconceptions about hospice sometimes make people
decide against seeking the very services they so desperately need.
Here are a few of the more common misconceptions, followed by
the actual truth.
MYTH: "Hospice is only for rich people”.
TRUTH: HospiceCare, Inc. is the only free-standing, not-for-profit
hospice in the area, and no one is refused hospice services due to
their inability to pay. We provide quality support with no out-of-
pocket expense to our patients and families.
MYTH: “Hospice is needed only at the very end of a person’s
life”.
TRUTH: The best time to contact hospice is after the decision has
been made not to seek aggressive treatment. The sooner our staff
can begin helping a family with their physical, spiritual, emotional
and social needs, the more that family will benefit.
MYTH: “Hospice services are just for cancer patients”.
TRUTH: Hospice serves people with other life-threatening illnesses
like cardiac disease, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s just to name a
few.
MYTH: “Hospice services are not available in nursing homes”.
TRUTH: HospiceCare, Inc. provides hospice care wherever the
patient resides – private homes, residential nursing facilities and
nursing homes.
MYTH: “Once I sign up for hospice services, I can never change
my mind and seek aggressive/curative treatment".
TRUTH: The patient has the ability - at any time - to stop hospice
services if they wish to seek aggressive/curative treatment. They
will need to sign a form that revokes our services, then they can
pursue treatment as they wish. If, in the future, they would stop
aggressive treatment and want to come back on hospice services,
they will simply be admitted again to our program.
MYTH: You can't keep your own doctor if you enter hospice.
TRUTH: Hospice physicians work closely with your doctor of
choice to determine a plan of care.
MYTH: Families should be isolated from a dying patient.
TRUTH: Hospice staff believe that when family members
(including children) experience the dying process in a caring
environment, it helps counteract the fear of their own mortality
and the mortality of their loved one.
